Is it a Jewish program?
This is a question we receive quiet often and are mostly unsure what it means for a program to be Jewish. We know Jewish as an identity marker for people who identify as such, but Tisalom is a collective of artists who work alongside each other. If anything, it utilizes a “talmudic” methodology, in which people of different genders, ethnicities and identities come together. Thus, Tisalom is open to all people who are interested in taking part in such a conversation.
Does it cost money for the artists to participate?
For a participating artist there are no costs expected, as long as they commit themselves to the program. We offer stipends as well, in order to allow maximum focus on their artistic process.
Who finances Tisalom?
50% of the Residency is financed by the Bayerisches Staatsministerium für Wissenschaft und Kunst, and the other 50% is financed by other local organizations and foundations from Lower Franconia. You can find more under our “thank you” page, and during the Residency a session is suggested in which all questions of financing are discussed.
I am a practicing religious person; can I still participate?
Absolutely. We respect and cultivate religious practice in our program and would love to make sure it will work out with your religious needs (be it Shabbat, Halal, Kashrut, Meditation/Prayer times, or other specific religious practices). Please mention this in your application and we can will make it work!
Is Tisalom a political program?
“The personal is political” was coined over 50 years ago. Since then, we understand that every personal identity and life has political implications. In Tisalom many diverse identities come together and reside in an artistic process, an act which might be seen as political in and of itself. In other words, the program is not political in the sense that it belongs to one party or the other. Nonetheless, it thrives to enhance the deep connection that already exists within the human condition. The goal is not to build new bridges, but to look together at the flowing water under the bridge which already exists.
